There Is Nothing Left To Lose - Making Of

About

Included as a bonus on enhanced CDs of Foo Fighters third album 'There Is Nothing Left To Lose' and also sent out as a Promo VHS, this short documentary goes behind the scenes of recording that album at Dave Grohl's Virginia home and Conway Recording Studio in Los Angeles.

The video begins in a documentary style, with Dave appearing in the auteur role, explaining the struggled of the recording process whilst wearing glasses and putting on a poor French accent. Interviews with Taylor and Nate are also included, as well as more with Dave in a more serious tone.

These interviews are interspersed with homemade behind the scenes footage in the studio.

The band go into detail with the backstory to 'Learn To Fly', including brief shots of Dave in Conway recording vocals for the track, overdubbed with the studio version. He is also seen in the control room of the studio

The video focuses on a couple of tracks specifically, with Dave talking about the premise behind the songs 'Learn To Fly', 'Gimme Stitches' and 'Ain't It The Life', interspersed with footage of the songs being recorded across both studios.

Footage of the "vocal station" at Conway is also shown, with an aborted vocal take of 'Live-In Skin', Dave struggling with the inside/outside lines. Mixing of 'Learn To Fly' is also shown, with Dave confirming he recorded drums for that track, as he tells Kasper he is "riding on the crash [cymbal]".

The video also features the now very well-known clip of Dave sitting on a couch at Conway, whisky bottle in hand, slurring "Don't tell me how to make a record. I was in Nirvana. I was in the greatest rock and roll band of the nineties". This was, of course, a skit performed as a joke, but it didn't stop several publications writing articles at the time as if it were serious.
